“For it is in giving that we receive”
     St Francis of Assisi

During my time as a yoga teacher, I taught my students that giving back is like breathing. It was an important lesson for them to learn and one that I would like to share here.

First, take a moment. Focus on your breathing. Follow your breath…

INHALE…
EXHALE…

Now, inhale again and hold your breath. Don’t let go of it…

Not so easy is it? You will start to feel like you’re going to explode!

Eventually you will have to exhale. To let go.

It works the other way around too.

If you continue to exhale without taking another breath, you’ll end up drained and gasping for air, completed exhausted.

Breathing is a balance between inhaling and exhaling. One cannot exist without the other.

The same is true of giving.

If you accept what is given to you without giving anything back then all you’ll be doing is taking and taking until finally you are so burdened and overwhelmed that you will feel ready to burst.

Similarly, if you spend all your time and energy giving of yourself to others without learning how to accept what is given to you, then you will never be in a position to fully receive what the universe has to offer you.

Giving back doesn’t have to be about the dollars you spend, it is the effort that you put into the act of giving itself. Whether you help someone directly such as a homeless or disabled person, give to a charity or a cause you believe in, a local hospital or a friend in need, how you give back is up to you.

This week I hosted a charity dinner party for 18 guests who all paid a thousand dollars to attend which will be donated to the All Charities Foundation.

I cooked a divine 7 course meal paired with wines, served over 144 plates of food, 156 glasses of wine and champagne and a magical evening was had by all. This is just one of the ways I have given back recently.

The most important thing to remember is that the act of giving back is all part of the process of receiving. It maintains balance in the same way that exhaling and inhaling allows when you breathe.

By taking the time to give back to the universe, you will then receive in ways you have never even dreamed of. Emotionally, romantically, financially…

You, your business and your loved ones will thrive and you will receive an abundance of blessings for the simple fact that you maintained that universal balance and gave of yourself.

So, if you find yourself blocked in certain areas of your life or you are lacking in sufficient time, energy or financial resources, ask yourself:

Are you GIVING?

Are you giving of yourself? Your time? Your energy? Your resources?

Are you giving back with all your heart and mind in all areas of your life?

Because the old saying really is true…

IN ORDER TO RECEIVE, YOU HAVE TO GIVE!

So, practice inhaling and exhaling, remind yourself of the balance between the two, that you cannot do one without the other and expect to thrive.

Realize that the art of giving exists within the very same balance that breathing does. They go hand in hand.

The most important lesson to take away is to always stay open to receiving blessings from the universe and make sure you remember to take the time to give of yourself in return.

Finally…

Always, Always Be Obsessively Grateful!
